Having graduated from Holy Name in 1953, I have very fond memories of my time there. If my memory services me correctly my father was the first president of the fathers club who raised many dollars on behalf of the dreams of Father Ryan.
Anonymous -- Traditional Latin Mass
San Francisco, CA USA
Sunday, Dec 28 11:56 AM
Fr. Don,

On July 7, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI declared in his motu proprio, Summorum Pontificum, that the pre-conciliar liturgy, the so called Tridentine, or Traditional Latin Mass, "the typical edition of the Roman Missal promulgated by Bl. John XXIII in 1962 was never abrogated," and that "in Masses celebrated without the people, each Catholic priest of the Latin rite, whether secular or regular, may use the Roman Missal published by Bl. Pope John XXIII in 1962, or the Roman Missal promulgated by Pope Paul VI in 1970, and may do so on any day with the exception of the Easter Triduum. For such celebrations, with either one Missal or the other, the priest has no need for permission from the Apostolic See or from his Ordinary."
Thus, it is clear that despite what many have said, the pre-concilliar liturgy was never abrogated, and any priest of the Latin Rite can say it with no permission. Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos said "priests can decide, without permission from the Holy See or the bishop, to celebrate the Mass in the ancient rite. And this holds true for all priests. It is the parish priests who must open the doors to those priests that, having the faculty [to do so], go to celebrate. It is not therefore necessary to ask any other permission."

Any priest can say the old Mass as a private mass without the people, and these masses can "be attended by faithful who, of their own free will, ask to be admitted." The letter states that if a "stable group" requests it, the pastor should do his best to provide for them. The same Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos said that a "stable group" could be as small as 3 people.
Father Don, please consider these words, as I request you provide for a Traditional Mass to be celebrated at your parish. I know many who would be willing to assist you in any way. I wish to remain anonymous for the time being. Please contact me at

I await your response!
God Bless!
